Taking Time to Really Look

sunset

This semester I’m taking a class in beginning digital photography. One of the homework assignments was to photograph a sunset. The first two evenings, I got so busy, I forgot to go outside and look. On the 3rd day, I actually set an alarm to remind myself  to head out into the backyard with my camera, at the appropriate time. Looking over our back wall, I realized  that I had never really looked at a sunset. It was lovely and I got a few good shots, but not as colorful as I had hoped. The next evening my husband and I climbed a near by trail just before the sun went down and were rewarded with a beautiufl view of a breathtaking sunset. The class assignment had turned into a very enjoyable experience that included a lovely walk with Martin.

The second assignment was to take an action shot. I chose the ocean water moving over rocks at Dana Point Harbor.  Again, something I had never really taken the time to observe closely.

When I registered for the class, my motive was to learn to take better photographs.  What I didn’t realize, was just how many beautiful subjects there are to photograph, when we slow down enough to look around and really see. I hope to improve my skills, but even if I don’t, I have learned a valuable life lesson. I find myself constantly looking for the perfect subject for my next photo, and this alone has taught me to appreciate the beauty that is all around us. Perhaps after reading this, you may find yourself taking a little more time to notice the beauty which I’m sure surrounds you too.

New Zealand, A Wonderful Place to Visit

Boat viewNow that we are retired, people sometimes ask if we get to travel. The answer is yes, to visit our three kids.We then get that poor you look from those who don’t really know where our children live. Those who do, know our children live in beautiful places well worth visiting. This photo of Tiare Iti  (Little Flower in Polynesia) belongs to our younger daughter, who lives in New Zealand. It is spring there, and as we await winter, they look forward to their summer. Nicole sent these photos to us this morning and I could not resist sharing them.  She is readying her boat for the summer sailing season.

New Zealand is a  lovely country and we are very fortunate to have a great reason to visit often.

I am looking forward, to sharing with you, in future posts, the beautiful places where our two other children live.

Molasses Brown Bread

cake and tea

This recipe for Molasses Brown Bread is an old one that I clipped from the London Free Press news paper in the 70s, when I was first married and living in Canada.

I discovered the clipping filed away in an old cook book, several weeks ago. I knew I wanted to post it on my blog sometime in the future, and when I got up this morning, I knew that today was the day.

It felt like fall. Baking and fall seem to go together. I know I may be rushing things, but the light coming through the windows was different. The angle and the intensity had changed. Yes, autumn was definitely on the way.

I love the word autumn, so just had to use it. While the bread baked, the entire house filled with the scent of cinnamon, and it was wonderful. The recipe says brown bread, but it really is more like a cake. Not as sweet, but perfect with a cup of tea or coffee.Dry ingredients

1 cup Whole Wheat Flour       Mix these dry ingredients together in a bowl and set aside
1 tsp. Baking Soda
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. Cinnamon

Beat one egg in a large mixing bowl until foamy. Mix in one cup of All Bran Cereal

Add 1/2 cup raisins, 2 Tbs. butter, and 1/3 cup molasses. Next add 3/4 cup hot water. Stir until butter is melted. Now add dry ingredients and mix only until combined. Do not over stir. Place batter in 9x5x3 well greased loaf pan. Bake at 350° F for 30-35 minutes, or until firm.

Serve warm or chilled. Slice thin. I hope you will enjoy.
Now that I have finished this post, I think I will go and have a slice of molasses brown bread, and a cup of tea.

A Black and White Baby Blanket

While knitting a baby blanket using a lavender, pink, and blue variegated yarn, I suddenly remembered back to a year ago, when our neighbor was having her first baby. On her registry was a request for a black and white baby toy. That is when I learned that babies see black and white before they begin to see colors. I, like most knitters, have been creating baby blankets from pale pastel shades. The idea of a black and white baby blanket intrigued me. I quickly looked through my stash of yarn, but no black, and certainly not enough white. I could not get the black and white blanket out of my head, even though my current project was only half finished. Before I knew it, I was on my way to my favorite craft store to buy the needed yarn. I also purchased a new set of circular needles. I prefer to knit with circular needles, finding them more comfortable to work with and less likely to slide from the stitches.

Shortly after returning home with my purchase, I cast on 111 stitches using the black yarn. I liked the idea of a black border for the blanket.

Next it was time to change over to white and begin a new pattern. I liked the look of the black and white combination. I was not sure if I should have changed the pattern, but I wanted to keep going before I made my decision.

Cosseette and blanket

Our Senegal parrot, Cossette is inspecting my work. She wasn’t sure she liked black and white at first, but seemed ok with it as her curiosity got the better of her.

Black and White blanket Several weeks have passed, and the blanket is finished. I tend to be a slow knitter and friends tell me I should learn to crochet, because it is faster. I will have to think about that.

I like the contrast of the black and white, but it does not seem quite right for a new born. I have a feeling that I’ll be going back to my pastel shades. In case you are wondering, Cossette was asleep for the night when I took this photo, so I had to find some stand ins.
