This is the time of year Amaryllis bulbs go on sale. Bulbs planted now will bloom for the holiday season. I chose a bright red variety, but they also come in pink, white, salmon, near-orange, and various patterns and stripes. One bulb can produce one or several flowers. The blossom is usually 8 to 9 inches across, on stout 2-foot stems. The above picture is from the box for the amaryllis kit I bought two weeks ago. The kit included the amaryllis bulb which you see in this next photo, planting medium and a plastic pot.
It is difficult to believe that something so beautiful can come from something so strange looking. It is rather like the story of the ugly duckling.

The bulb planted in its plastic pot. The Amaryllis bulb will bloom in just a few weeks. It’s a very fast grower, and is a wonderful way to encourage children to take part in gardening. I planted this Amaryllis bulb on November 1st. In the photo below you can see how much it has grown in eleven days.
First thing every morning I look to see how much it has grown overnight. I’ll give you updates as our amaryllis progresses. I’m tempted to start another one, but I’lll practice being patient and enjoy the one we have. Stay tuned for future photos. I wonder how many blossoms this plant will produce. It will be exciting to see. I can hardly wait.

Sailing Into an Austin Sunset

I received these sailing photos this afternoon from our son and daughter-in-law. Looked like a beautiful Austin, Texas afternoon. Perfect for a sunset sail on Lake Travis. In the second photo you can see the color of the setting sun reflected on the sails.
A Day in Sacramento, the California State Capitol

Last Friday, I had the opportunity to fly with a good friend to Sacramento for the day. The flight took a little over an hour, and the views were awesome. We flew directly over Catalina Island, then hugged the coast until we headed inland toward the California state capitol. I took the above photo as we neared the airport and prepared to land. You can see how flat the land is, with the Sacramento river winding through farm lands.

After landing we caught an Uber cab to the California State Capitol Building, in the city. We then spent several hours exploring the interior of capitol building.

The woodwork on this stair case is an example of the beauty found throughout the building.

Later we walked to Old Town Sacramento, only ten blocks from the Capitol Building. Horse drawn carriages seemed to be very popular.

The California State Railroad Museum is found in Old Town and here is a bright yellow caboose we saw outside.
We were in Sacramento for one day, but it was a wonderful day and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and were able to see many things.

We Landed back at John Wayne airport in Orange County as the sun was setting, and the lights were beautiful. It had been a great day, but it’s always good to be home.
A Night of Halloween Fun

We just finished handing out the Halloween candy. We counted about 100 children, and most were accompanied by parents, or older brothers and sisters. I couldn’t help but notice how polite our young visitors were. I heard a continual chorus of please and thank you’s throughout the evening. It was a fun night. My husband, Martin decorates the house every year and is the main candy server. My job is to hold back our dog Annika, who wants to get out the door and run with the trick-or-treaters. I can’t believe Halloween has come and gone. Next stop, Thanksgiving.
A Field Trip to Oak Glen, California

Oak Glen, in the San Bernardino Mountains is known for apple growing. Here are a few of the many varieties.
