Peruvian Old Man Cactus-Espostoa Lanata

 


Meet the  Peruvian Old Man Cactus. Espostoa Lanata. This cactus makes a wonderful house plant. It is very slow growing and rarely needs watering. The porous soil should be left to dry completely. between waterings.

During the spring and summer growth season water thoroughly, then let the soil drain and dry out completely before the next watering. The Peruvian Old Man Cactus retains a lot of water, which is why it is drought tolerant.  Even less water is needed in winter.

Bright indirect light encourages Old Man to flower. While doing my research on this variety of cactus, I saw many differing comments about flowering. Some said the cactus had to reach a certain height or age. They all agreed that overwatering must be avoided, and making certain there is enough bright light given. It is rare for this cactus to flower indoors, but there are exceptions.

The white hair is soft, but beneath it, there are sharp spines  A good reason to keep away from children and pets.

During spring and summer, you can fertilize once a month with cactus fertilizer.  I also learned that Peruvian Old Man Cactus, if properly cared for, can live up to two hundred years. That is so amazing. So, if you would like a plant that can be passed down to new generations, This is the plant for you.
