Garden of Surprises.

swing-time-fuscia Since my return from New Zealand, our weather has been rainy and dull, so I haven’t spent much time in the garden. Yesterday the clouds disappeared and the sun came out. This morning I was outside first thing, ready to work and, to my surprise, I found my fuschia plant in full bloom. It’s gorgeous, as you can see in the photo above.  A few weeks ago I pruned, transplanted, then fertilized my rather neglected plant. I was so happy to see that my efforts paid off. Below you see a second surprise.

100_4723While transplanting the original plant, a small piece of that plant had broken free and I had placed it in a separate pot. When I left for New Zealand the offshoot looked as though it had died. I didn’t discard the dead plant, and I’m so glad that I didn’t because, as you see, the baby fuschia is happily growing. It will be great fun to watch it mature.

The third surprise was a Monarch butterfly caterpillar munching on the milkweed. I took a quick photo, which you see below.

Healthy looking fellow, isn’t he? In a day or two he’ll climb the wall, take shelter under the ledge, and enter the chrysalis stage. Today I watched a full grown Monarch butterfly laying eggs on one of our milkweed plants, so it looks like we’ll be seeing quite a few of these caterpillars before long. Tomorrow morning I will be out in the garden again, and I’m wondering what new surprises await me.

Love my Stove Top Espresso Maker

Well, I did it! On April 21st, I posted Coffee in New Zealand. A short write up on how to use a stove top espresso maker. I used one every morning while in New Zealand and enjoyed it so much, that I planned to bring one home with me, and I did. I also brought a pound of espresso coffee with me, so I could prepare a cup as soon as I arrived home. Above you see my new espresso maker on my stove.

I also brought some of my favorite ginger cookies home with me as well. This brand of cookie, called Ginger Nuts, is very crunchy, and perfect for dunking in my coffee. Before my ginger cookie supply runs out, I better find a recipe for a good dunking ginger snap. Will share it with you if I find one.

New Zealand Memories

Ocean and GreenI took this photo in Mount Maunganui New Zealand, two days before heading home to Southern California. There is a beautiful trail that leads around the mountain. The locals refer to it, as walking the mount. When I visited two years ago, there’d been a land slide, so it wasn’t possible to hike the entire trail, but this year it was open all the way around. As you can see, the scenery is gorgeous. I’m always amazed at how green and rugged it is.Charlie on RockHere is our nine year old grandson, Charlie who is like a little mountain goat and loves to climb.

Me-and-Char-on-the-trailHere you can see more of the rugged coastline as we continued along the trail. It was a wonderful hike, and it’s fun to look at the photos now that I’m home. They remind me of all the fun things I did during my three weeks in New Zealand.

Rediscovering the Rotary Egg Beater

100_4501
Yesterday I showed you how I’ve been making my coffee, and this morning I tried a new way to froth the milk. A simple rotary egg beater. I remember my mom using one when I was a little girl, before she got her first electric hand mixer This looks like yet another item to add to my kitchen.

Here’s the laundry hanging on the line. A perfect day of sun and gentle breezes dried two loads beautifully, and they smelled so fresh.
New Zealand is a very modern country, with its share of dishwashers and clothes dryers, but they have a love and respect for some of the older, simpler ways as well. It makes me realize how too often we jump into the newer ways and forget the old. The older ways may take a little more time, but they can also be more relaxing. I’ve travelled to New Zealand several times to visit relatives, and each time I gain even more respect for their traditions and way of life.
