The Starfish Flower is a fascinating and unusual plant known for its appearance and smell. The flower has a flat five-pointed shape that resembles a starfish. The flowers range from yellow and tan to dark reddish-brown. Bloom season is fall and summer. This plant has not flowered yet, so I do not have a photograph to share, but stay tuned!
An unpleasant smell from the flower attracts flies, which help pollinate the plant. The starfish flower is a succulent native to southern Africa.
It grows best in bright, indirect sunlight, warm temperatures, and well drained soil. The leaves, one of which is shown below, are not sharp and the plant can be handled easily. The smell isn’t always really strong, unless you are close to the flower.
The plant above belongs to our son, who is visiting with us. He was drawn to it by the unusual leaf shape. We were quite surprised to learn the details of this plant, especially its distinct od0r.
